17th December 1940
It was quite nice this morning as regards weather and sea. Our position at noon was 53°, 38°N, 24°pa”W and everyone was looking forward to doddling quietly to Manchester. Unfortunately, at 4 o’clock the commodore suddenly gave the order to change course 290° to port i.e. to nearly retrace our steps. He said we were to do this all night at 5 knots! It seems funny to be going NW!!
Food is pretty poor and very scarce, owing to bad management by the steward. The news said 100,100 odd tns. of shipping was sunk last week.
