13th May 1941
After much deliberation, I decided to go ashore with Paddy, who kept persuading me from about 7 o’clock till half past nine! I don’t usually reckon on going ashore on the last day, but as Paddy wouldn’t go without me, I went. We met one of the fifth engineers ashore, he wanted to go to Hamilton. We missed the train, so Paddy and the 5th like a couple of idiots, hired a Tandem and cycled to Hamilton in uniform! I went and sat on some rocks, and watched the fish and other strange “water animals” swimming in the emerald green water. St George itself is not much of a place, although much better than Curacao. The people are very nice and very patriotic.
Hardly one nigger passed me without a “good morning sir” and every one was fully decent.
St George is actually only an island, and with the other numerous islands, forms Bermuda itself. The launce ride from the ship across about a mile of sea and lagoon was very nice and so was the delightfully peaceful sunset which we saw when we got back. The convoy leaves tomorrow and we have the old “Chitporal” (?) as escort once again.
Several other ships here were with us last time.
