We did not meet the other convoy this morning as we should have done, owing to fog, but their escort was sighted this evening, and so we are going to cruise around until morning and then join them.
At 4 o’clock this morning, just before I came off watch, I heard the 2nd mate “sitting” on the whistle twice, meaning I am going to port”. Then he frantically rang the engine room telegraph saying “STOP”. At breakfast, we learned that the escort had nearly rammed us from the stern, her correct position being 3 cables off our port bow. Fog plays funny tricks.
