1st July 1941
I went ashore this afternoon, in an effort to get some civvies, i.e. a sports coat and trousers. I did get the sports coat but not the trousers. It was pretty hot wandering about in uniform, especially amongst the sky-scrapers. I took the ferry from “Haboken” to “Christoper Street” N.Y and from there made my way by subway, to 14th Street, 7th Avenue. There I did my shopping. The lady in “Hearns” who served me with stockings, was very decent indeed and helped me a lot. Like most of the people, she wanted to know how things were going at home.
Always an impressive sight, the Empire State Building stood out tall and stately against the hazy sky line. Further up town by towering buildings of Wall Street and Broadway loomed up misty and blue in the uncertain light.
