2nd July 1941

I didn’t go ashore during the morning, but after lunch, Mr Bonner, the 3rd mate, the fifth engineer and myself went to Battery Place, and back to 14th Street Seventh Avenue, where I got my trousers.

At Battery Place, one gets a marvellous view of the chief sky scrapers in Lower Manhattan. I intend to try and get a drawing of them tomorrow. I did quite a bit of shopping for the Chinks, as they are not allowed ashore.

Though I hate looking like an excursionist, I couldn’t help marvelling away again at those sky scrapers – words fail me.

I forgot to mention that Paddy went ashore on Monday night and came back on Tuesday afternoon. He was mugged and was advised by Mr Bonner, myself and others not to take all his cash, so he gets no sympathy.

He went with two engineers who left him and came back at about 5am (I also went to the aquarium today).
