15 April 1940

Yesterday at 6 pm I received part of what I am pretty certain was a distressed message. The signals were very faint and atmospherics were bad. She gave her position as about 500 miles from us, and attacked by an armed raider. Should I say nothing and forget about it, perhaps jeopardise the safety of the crew, or tell the captain, and risk being sworn at if it turned out to be nothing at all? It was a difficult question.

Today has nearly passed now, and, like a good many others will in the future I expect, pass without anything much happening.

The sun is beginning to get hot now, as we approach the tropics and equator.

I never knew the sea could be such a beautifully deep blue, or the white horses be so sparkly brilliant. I suppose it is partly the depth of the sea Which makes it look so blue. We must be somewhere over the shot where the legend has it that there is a sunken city where a people lived who were the most cultural and peace loving creatures imaginable.
