21st January 1944
I caught the 10am Flying Scot from Kings X. Mother, Dad and Iris came up to see me off. The weather was beautiful right up to Newcastle, but after that it clouded over somewhat.
I enjoyed the ride more than I expected to.
I just missed a connection at Waverley Station to Falkirk and had to wait 1 ¾ hours for a train from Prince’s St. At Falkirk I bumped into No.1., which was a bit of luck because he knew where the ship was lying. We had a long walk – about half an hour – to No.3 coal tips. It poured hard with rain and blew a gale!
George was on board when we arrived at midnight.
The ship will not be leaving until Tuesday, owing to repairs.
