21st February 1944
Our first glimpse of Bȏne’s environs was not helped by the weather for it was pelting with rain. Later, however, it cleared and the sun came out so we were able to see the high hills covered with shrub, ploughed fields and vineyards. The contrast of the deep green with the rich brown earth appeared very pleasant. Each field is separated from the other by hedges much as in England.
Opposite to our anchorage there is a very pleasant sandy bay which has small white washed houses with red roofs close to the water’s edge. The whole is very pretty and could be compared with Devon.
