17th March 1944
I went up to see the naval fellow this morning. In peace time he was a freelance illustrator for American magazine and Had his home in New York. He first worked as a cartoonist on a Washington paper, but later went to Paris to study illustration drawing.
His father was a landscape painter. This afternoon, No.1 and I went for a cycle ride to the same farm as G and I went to a few days back. We had sturdy bikes and it was nearly killed both of us! However, we managed to buy some beautiful lemons picked straight from the trees. We carried 11 kilos (24lbs approx.) between us. Halfway back, No.1’s tire went flat but fortunately we managed to borrow a pump off a passing cyclist. The weight on our lower backs was pretty chronic. However, we made it! The lemons cost 10 francs a kilo.
I had a letter from Mary waiting for me when I returned.
Total dist. 32 miles.
