22 April 1940

After a simply lovely time at Curaçao, we weighed anchor at 5:30 (1130 at home). Never do I wish to see better weather, not a better evening. After the sun has gone down, the moon came up in full, from behind the brown grass-covered hills which dominate the island. By the time we had dinner the island had nearly disappeared, and we were making for Panama. Nobody went to bed when they should’ve done. I really ought to have gone to bed at 6:30 to get up again at 1 o’clock, but it was such a lovely nightAnd the moon was so gloriously bright and clear, that we all walked about or sent about on deck clad only in a pair of shorts. It was lovely. You couldn’t get a moon like it in England, and of course the reflection in the water increase the effect.

At Curaçao I went ashore a bit to stretch my legs. MEMORANDA At end of April.
