14th May 1944
I ‘phoned Mrs Davies’ apartment at about 10am and learned that Peggy and Cissie were leaving on the 1830 train. They asked me to go with them so I obtained the necessary permission. During this afternoon, Vivian and I went up the Emp. State for the first time! The lifts were not nearly so good as at Radio City but nevertheless were pretty fast. The view from the top was magnificent and completely beyond words. The best view can be obtained by looking north towards Central Park. Le Guardia airport can be quite easily seen.
I arranged with Peggy and Cissie to be at Pennsylvania railroad station at 1830. Unfortunately I met the 2nd mate while on my way down and he thought he had a quicker method of getting there by bus. Actually it took 3 times longer than the subway so I was 5 minutes late at Penn station. Naturally the girls had gone but I managed to catch the 1853 express which arrived at North Broad St in time for the same local train as the girls caught from Reading Terminal! Luckily I got in the same carriage as they were in so did not have to worry about a car at the other end.
Mrs Tetlow was still the same as ever and greeted me with a big kiss.
