29 April 1940
Today has passed without anything much happening excepting that one of the engines broke down at about 9 o’clock. We had to continue on one engine, a half speed for an hour yeah still manage to do 432 miles in the 24 hours. At night time flashes of light can be seen in the water. I am told this is the phosphorous shown off by the fish. Flying fish are very prominent and hardly a minute goes by without sing about half a dozen of them leap out of the water.
This evening, the heavier swell that we have had so far, came up, and cause the old ship to roll about. Looking out of my porthole window, I saw glimpses of sky and city flashing by alternately. Sitting in a bath, the water goes all over the place. One moment you are nearly high and dry, the next minute you’re up to your neck!
