7th January 1942
The weather has been very cold ever since we first arrived. Snow has fallen spasmodically. Going ashore in the launch is quite a business these days. Coming back at 11 o’clock at night, it is even worse. By the time all the ships have been visited, it is well after midnight.
Stayed on board today, as I had nothing to go ashore for. As scarcely anyone was on board, I kept a look out on deck. The temperature was down to 14° or 18° below freezing point, at midnight. Everything is freezing solid, including the fresh water tanks. Even the salt water pipes froze and burst, so we are minus sanitary water.
The convoy conference was held this afternoon, we sail in the morning.
