2nd March 1942

Soon after breakfast, I caught a Birkenhead bus from just outside the dock gates. I popped in Marconi’s office in L’pool to collect a letter from Mary, had my haircut, wrote two letters, and then returned to the ship.

All the morning and afternoon we had been taking on bunkers. Being Welsh coal, there is plenty of dust, in fact it’s a good ¾’s of inch thick on deck.

It finds its way into every nook and cranny in the accommodation. It reminds me of the dear old “Ethel”.!

Phone through to home with only ½ an hour wait.
