11th March 1942
At about 0630 this morning, we passed very close to a tanker – or I should say ½ a tanker – which, as the Comm. Ship signalled, was torpedoed 17 days ago! A salvage tug was standing by her. It was a good job that it was daylight or the ship in the next column to ourselves would have collided with her! I bet the old man and crew will be annoyed when they find out that one half of her kept afloat after all!
At 1910 (this evening), we all but had a collision with one of the destroyers escorting us, who had “heaved to” for some reason or other, without burning any lights. Whistles were sounded and we just managed to scrape past but only just. (Good job there was no bad weather).
Heard first news since leaving: “Turpitz” was attacked off Norway. No results observed due to heavy smoke-screen.
