22nd March 1942

Today I fulfilled my invitation to Peggy Tetlow’s house, 3 miles beyond a place called Ambler, way out in the country. I arrived there all right and had to meet numerous people who were temporarily there.

As soon as they were gone however, the Tetlows and Jacksons (people “across the way”) sort of congregated together in the study and talked!

At about 8 o’clock we had a wonderful meal of scrambled eggs, scrapple (a potent dish), lettuce salad, dressing etc., and tinned fruit with cream plus a huge chunk of choc. cake!

May be I should describe the house a little. It is 200 years old; has innumerable rooms; has colossal plain brick fireplaces with cranes for roasting; has three or four bathrooms, and is surrounded by 40 acres of ground, which belongs to the Tetlow’s! The highway which passes right by their house, used to be an old mud track upon which the stage coaches used to drive. George Washington passed that way frequently and often stayed for a drink at the house when it was an inn.

There are two girls in the family of four. One is Peggy and the other answers to the name of Cissie! Both are very pleasant and enjoyable company.

Milk was given me by the pint, as they keep their own cows.

The weather was glorious and the ride in the train very enjoyable.
