2nd January 1945

We learn today that 6 ships have been torpedoed off Cherbourg recently (around Christmas). One was the troopship ‘Livingston’ where 1100 lives were lost. There was also another troopship lost.

We sailed for St Helen’s Roads again at 2030 as Commodore ship. We expect to join a Bristol Channel convoy straight about. Depth charges were dropped very close at 2330 and we were told to alter course to avoid attack. It is impossible to go into the channel now without getting incidents like this.

The weather is on the change now.
