Dad decided that we should go up to town to do some shopping and go to the pictures after.
While we were walking along Holborn main road, we stopped to look into Meluishes Tool Shop, by Chancery Lane Underground. Just as we were looking, a V.2 came down showering glass into the street on all sides including the street we were in. Fortunately our window remained intact.
A man standing on a window sill on the other side of the street, managed to stay there. Everybody was amazingly calm, and continued to do their job. Lyon’s cake shop had its window display rudely deposited onto the pavement, as did many other shops.
It is hard to say what our immediate impressions were, but we are inclined to think that we were momentarily stunned and could not take everything in.
I can remember watching the glass fall into the street AFTER I had turned away from our window.
We went to the Leicester Square theatre in the afternoon, with Iris, but I don’t think we felt very happy.
