11th June 1942
Last night we had some startling news. A ship that was in convoy with us – a pretty big Dutchman, has been torpedoed just 50 miles astern of us! We passed that position 4 or 5 hours earlier. She had six aircraft on deck. Her cargo is a big loss. We sighted smoke on the horizon at 6 o’clock this evening. It can’t be anyone from the convoy, so its either a raider or an American of some description!
