26th June 1942

We had to stay on board during this morning owing to the passes not coming down. By 2pm however, we managed to get ashore and get up town.

I was rather surprised to find a very efficient trolley bus service running from Point Docks to the city. A rather strange incident was when the conductor shouted, yelled and swore at a negro who had failed to tender the exact fare and also at a woman (European) for the same offence. Both took it like lambs.

The buildings up to the docks were much the same as one finds in any hot climate city. Yellow concrete flat, square building, interspersed with wooden and coloured bungalows. In the centre of the city however we came across some very fine, tall modern buildings. The trolley stopped at the post office so we sent all our mail off for a start. They were satisfactorily efficient. They also changed our English money. After walking around for 2hrs or so, we had a very nice tea and then made for the pictures. Neither houses nor films were very good, nevertheless we saw “All at Sea” and “The Three Stooges” for 1/3 (the seats really being 2/6 but we were in the Merchant Navy!). After the show we found our way back to the ship and so to bed.
