2nd May 1945
We sailed for Antwerp at 02:00 hours. Saw the whole of the gold shell sticking out of the water. She makes the Fourth visible wreck in that neighbourhood.
We had great news today: the Germans in northern Italy have surrendered unconditionally! The treaty was signed on 26/4/45.
We have anchorage for the night at Terneuzen. The old man brought the ship up as there were no pilots. We nearly had a nasty accident. Yankee TNT ship swung across the channel and our bowels, and some barge loaded with munition got in between. We only missed by a hairbreadth.
