8th March 1945
We sailed at 0200 hours as previously arranged and had quite a job following the course during the hours of darkness. We saw a great number of wrecks. During the morning we heard a ship giving details on the R/T of being torpedoed. Her rudder and propeller were gone and she was sinking.
We entered the Scheldt at about 1400 hours but could see the Coast of Belgium from Ostend onwards. Then the coast of Holland came into view. There was nothing other than I had expected. Numerous windmills and red, high-pitched dormered roofs with fancy gables lined the banks, but the country was flat but for tall trees.
[Rough sketch of shore]
Four flying bombs have passed over the xxx tonight. The search-lights pick them out but don’t fire. We are anchored just passed Terneuzen prior to going up tomorrow.
