11th March 1945

From midnight we were treated to a display of very loud bangs from flying bombs landing over near the opposite bank of the river.

While we were leaving at 0700 hrs, we saw at least four bombs drop on the other bank. The blast from there was terrific and shook the whole ship. On one occasion, Cliff thought he saw a flare, but through the glasses he discovered that it was a F.B. on fire and heading straight for the ship. Luckily it dropped right on the other side, and we only caught a very heavy blast while we were in mid stream.

Eventually we sailed ok, reached the Thames anchorage off Southend at about 0200 hours. We will go alongside tomorrow
