28th March 1945
We sailed this afternoon. At 1745 the “Action Stations” sounded & we learned that the “Belinda” tanker just ahead of us, had been mined. There was a large pall of smoke & a loud bang.! She abandoned ship at once & let go her rafts but as she did not sink, they returned aboard. It was a good job she was gas free.
A fog came down soon after I went on watch at 2000 hours & the Old Man got pretty panicky. He wanted to anchor but when permission from the Commodore was refused when I asked on the R/T. We eventually made the Downs anchorage.
