Location
Marseilles, France
Age
22 Years

3rd October 1945

Discharged a little cargo into lorries. Coal was manhandled into big grabs and lifted ashore by derricks.

There were many German prisoners working on the quay. They looked very dishevelled and weary. There were a lot of peanuts on the quay, lying in the dust and they grovelled for these like pigs. After the French workmen had finished with their food cans, they asked to lick them out!

Some of the lads on board talked to them and gave them cigarettes. One young chap was taken prisoner in Germany and handed over to the French. He lived in the Russian occupied part of the town, and was not anxious to go back.
