11th September 1942
I had to remain on board this morning while John had his tooth out. This afternoon No. 1 & myself went to Keamari which is a small place, very close by, and had a look at a very good curio shop. They had a good selection of woodcarving and ivory work. There was a lovely table, in laid with Mother of Pearl in the form of the Taj Mahal – it cost R75, but could probably be bargained for. I intend to buy it.
In the evening John and I went to the pictures. American troops are everywhere, and the prices are consequently very high as they get 300 rupees a month. All the things that they have been used to in America have followed them out here including their own cigarettes!
