13th October 1943
Yet another glorious sunrise into a cloudless blue sky. We expect to arrive at Aden sometime this afternoon.
We sighted Aden at about 1pm. The usual rocks were the first things we saw, such as Masirah or Ras al Hadd. Gradually these developed, until finally we entered the harbour. By 5.30 pm we were anchored alongside the oil pipe line.
The town, from there, appeared to lie on a small, flat patch of land, lying at the foot of high surrounding hills.
We were very fortunate in being able to have a Rs 10 Rupee draw & also to get ashore. The clocks ashore were one hour astern of us, so we were ashore an hour early!
Merton Miller & I went to the Canteen & had some very nice trifle & ice cream.
We then wandered around town a bit, & ended up at the New Cinema where we saw, “Bad Little Angel.” This cinema was open air & situated so that the towering silhouettes of the hills behind, met in a sort of Khyber Pass. The full moon was brilliant & was, early on, framed in the “pass.” A cool breeze blew all the time. It was rather like a picture from a book. It wasn’t real.
