18th October 1943

We sighted the entrance to the Gulf of Suez at about midday today. The usual large, rocky heights bounded on either side.

Last night, or rather early this morning, received an SSSS which said that 2 torpedoes had been fired but both of them had missed! This afternoon a Yank sent a coded SSSS reporting a sub. in the Red Sea, even though it gave the correct recognition signal.

We get the hourly positions of about 10 hospital ships every night. One of them, the “VITA” (the Moreno ship Mr Satchwell left her in Bombay).

The breeze has stiffened as we approach Suez.
