Montgomery’s counter-offensive against the German salient in the Ardennes, is meeting with some success.
We sailed at 2200 hours yesterday, but never was there a more lost cause! We failed to find the convoy and despite the fact that we were supposed to be Commodore! Then we heard a ship using our convoy’s call-sign and acting as Commodore! Anyway, we went across as best we could, and just after I’d got onto the bridge at 0400 hrs, what should we nearly ram but a confounded submarine!! It came up right under our bows by all accounts and the Mate was so excited that he shouted “Stand Port” and sounded one blast (which means starboard!) so he corrected this by blowing 2. How polite!! Anyway, nothing happened so we continued successfully to Cherbourg which we reached at about 0800 hours. There was a ship alongside at the time, so we have been at anchor ever since.
