6th November 1943
At 0935 the alarm bells started to send out their mournful AAA’s. People started grabbing their tin helmets & lifejackets & making for their action stations. I was assigned to the port Oerlikon gun on the bridge. When I got there the destroyers were opening fire on a Focke-Wulf. We were the extreme outside ship, front line, port side. The plane was travelling along that side but a good way out. Slowly it encircled the convoy, then when it was astern, a destroyer opened fire for’ard, where another one had made an appearance. Fortunately nothing developed. At lunch time a Corvette put a black flag, meaning that he was searching for a sub that he had detected on his asdic gear. It is highly probable that the planes will have wirelessed any subs in the vicinity, & also their base. It is estimated that they are abt. 800 m fm base.
