What a night last night was! The rain simply tipped down, and it was so dark that you might just as well have been blind.
When I came off watch at 8 o’clock this morning, a very heavy sea was running, and the sky was cloudy and dark. A strong breeze is whipping the tops off the waves, and spray is coming over the ship’s sides. It is hard to tell whether the sea is heavier than when we came back from Guernsey, as the ship is so much bigger.
The men have been taking the heavy blocks up to the tops of the mast. When the men were pulling one very heavy one up, a rope broke and the block came hurtling down on to the deck. Fortunately, the men ran away quickly enough, before any damage was done to them.
That means it won’t be long before N. Zealand.
