8th May 1940
The atmospherics last night were really terrible, nearly knocked my head off. Mr Salter says he has never known it to be so bad. When I came off watch, it was pouring hard with rain, and the decks were very, very treacherous. The sea is very choppy, and there is a good deal of motion, so one has to be careful.
The sky has cleared, but the sea is still rough. The sun produces lovely rainbow effects in the spray, which is blowing over the side continually. They say it is always like this round here; to me it just does not seem possible. A whole month out!
The clock went back another hour last night, making it 13 hrs difference between home time. Tonight we go forward 23½ hrs.
The sea is heavier now, and when she goes up a really big wave, succeeding waves come without pause and hit the bottom hard, causing a series of terrible jolts.
