4th June 1940

We are just beginning to reach the warmer weather at last. The reason why we have not reached there sooner, is because we are returning on a totally different course, to the one which we came out. We are using what they call a great sailing arc, which on an ordinary flat map, looks a mighty long way round, but seen on a globe, it is the shortest course.

I should think our passenger must be bored stiff. She just sleeps, eats and drinks, and never seems to have any kind of a hobby.

All yesterday morning (from 12 midnight to 6am G.M.T), I listened to an American ship asking for medical advice. She had a very sick man on board, and no doctor. She is having to return to port. She wasn’t an awful long way away from us.
