8th June 1940

The wind rose during the night, and has continued to blow all day. The sky has been overcast, and the sea fairly high. Seas were breaking over the fo’c’sle head, and tonight, before turning in, I stood on the fore part of the boat deck, and just stood and watched water spray break away from the sides and come dashing across the deck with a sound like that of a whip (whip like sound!!).

All I could see was the silhouette of the main mast and the derricks, the outline of her bows, and the white foam, continuously streaming away behind us.

When I went up to relieve Mr Salway for breakfast this morning, he greeted me with the words “You aren’t half getting fat in the face bloke”. (He always refers to me as ‘bloke’).

As I look back now, and see what has happened during these last few weeks, I see how quickly time has passed. It is now over a month since we arrived in Auckland!
