The wind continues to be on the high side. In the early hours of the morning, while I was on watch, several very heavy seas came over on the port side, just below the wireless room. Somebody had left the door open which leads into a passage-way containing the 2nd and 3rd mates’ rooms. These were flooded right through. The water passed right from one side of the cabins, through the saloon, and across to the mates’ room on the starboard side. Fires have been going all day today, to dry the place out.

We are now “right amongst the subs.,” for this latitude is where all the ships have been sunk of late.

We started steering a zig zag course, about 2 days ago now. It makes our average speed about 7 knots, as compared to 8.5 knots before.
