1st August 1940
The weather has been very nice indeed today, although there has been enough swell to make the ship roll nastily – but then she’d roll in dry dock!!
The skipper says he wants me to do a drawing of his wife and children from a photograph. “Tich” (the cabin boy) also wants me to do something to stick up in his cabin. I shall charge soon.
I had an amusing time today – cleaning out my own room. There was me, busily beating out the carpet, and dusting the room out generally! It’s not often that I can do it, because of these 6 hour watches but that was one of the times that I could.
You’ve no idea how fond I am of my bunk now! I look after it with loving care, and when its time for me to turn in and get a couple of hours sleep, I fall contentedly among the friendly bumps and nobs of the mattress, and fall fast asleep – at once!! I never know anymore till I see “Tich” standing agitatedly at the door, telling me the time.
