8th August 1940
Strangely enough I wasn’t a bit tired during last night’s watch, in fact I felt quite fresh! This was probably because I was occupied.
It is very difficult to write now, as the ship is vibrating terribly.
More fog came down today, so we had to take “direction finder” bearings.
The skipper was in a raging temper this morning because one or two sailors had seen fit to throw the mincing machine overboard. They said the didn’t want any more bad minced meat, not the “leavings” minced either. Still if the officers can eat the food then why can’t they? Anyway, the “old man” had everybody in front of him while he raged away on the bridge. He reckons he is going to (if he can find out who did it) get the chap 6 months, make him bring a new mincer, and pay a fine!
