We have, as our escorting ship, the “Aurania”. She was once a White Star Line passenger liner, but has since been converted to an armed merchant cruiser. Besides the “Aurania”, we have a destroyer.
It is good to get back to the old times of watch. I never knew how lucky I was! I was only thinking this afternoon that during the whole of the 3 weeks it took to reach New York, I was never able to go for a walk on deck!
The early morning was fine, but pretty chilly. The average speed for the convoy today, has been 6 knots! Officially, it is supposed to be 9 knots, but for most of us, this is impossible!
During our stay in Halifax, the 3RD mate and myself helped Jock and Harries (the apprentice) to learn Morse-lamp signalling, while they in turn, taught me semaphore.
I am glad to say I can now do a reasonable speed. So far, the skipper has asked me if I found a girl in Auckland, Wellington, Hull, Liverpool, N. York, Albany and London.
