10th July 1940
Mary and I were out all the afternoon, and when we came back for tea, a telegram had arrived. It said report at Hull depot at 9am tomorrow morning. This meant catching the 11.20pm from King’s Cross. It was a bit of a rush, and it was pouring hard with rain, but thanks to mum and Iris, we managed it. Then followed a few hurried goodbyes, and then we were off again down to the station. There was quite a party of us – Mum, Dad, Iris, Eric and Mary. The 10.13 train for London Bridge came in on time, so with a few more hurried goodbyes, I was whisked away to London Bridge. After much trouble, got a taxi – a new experience in the black-out – and was taken to King’s Cross. Here everything went smoothly and after changing at Doncaster I arrived in Hull at 1.15am.
