18th July 1940

All day it has drizzled with rain, and made the docks look very much more depressing than they would otherwise do. After going up to the city to phone home, I came back just in time for dinner.

At 1pm we moved once more, but only a few docks further down the Alexandria Docks. It seems more than likely that we shall leave on Saturday, but some say we shall manage it tomorrow evening.

I went to the pictures once more, so as to be out of harms way, and saw quite a good programme. On returning, I thought I would like a walk, so I tried to find the new dock that we had moved to by a different route. Unfortunately, I could not see the ship, so turned to one side to the end of another dock to get a better view-point. At once I head a hard Yorkshire voice say “Halt! Who goes there!” I  nearly got a bullet in me, for not saying ”Friend” but just said “It’s only me” and started walking towards the dim shadow. Immediately he said “Stay where you are”. Then I spoke again and he said “Oh no! You’re English!”.
