21st June 1940
The weather has been rather overcast and grey, so I have not been sitting on deck sunning myself! As a matter of fact, I am endeavouring to catch up with my washing. I just do one article of clothing a day, so that it can be packed away (provided I don’t want it again).
Messages have been coming through by the dozen, and reception is still very bad. Even Mr Salway says he has to strain every nerve, and still can’t read them sometimes, and he’s had 25 years of it!!
I shall soon be losing all the weight I have gained because when you are on short-waves, you can’t have the fans on. So by the time I’ve taken down an hour’s worth of code messages, I am dripping with perspiration! The gunner has got our two depth charges in position for operating.
