23rd June 1940

The waves have been very large today and the old ship has been doing a good bit of heavy rolling. On a level keel the horizon comes exactly halfway across my porthole, but on a bad roll I could see nothing but sea and the next second nothing but sky. Still it’s a merry life! Messages are coming through wholesale now. Mr Salway is fed up with them.

After two hours concentrated effort, straining every nerve, one feels just about exhausted, especially when the fan has to be off for short-waves.

A week tomorrow and we shall be back home! Now that I look back, it seems that time has flown faster than I could possibly have imagined. It seems only yesterday that I was standing in that wretched stable at W/T. School, eating sandwiches, and feeling colder than a block of ice. Still I’d go through a couple more winters like that for this trip (if it were necessary!).
