10th April 1940

I arrived quite safely at 9:40 AM. I found my cabin without any difficulty, and soon had the hang of all the gadgets. Everything seems to have happened with such a rush that I haven’t had time to think of what it is all going to mean. I think I shall enjoy it. I have a very nice cabin boy, who must be 15 years old, but looks 10. His name is Howard. The first officer – Mr Salway suggested to me that we might take on troops, but it is only a rumour.

Had a very good meal at 12:45. I had my first watch at 6:00 o’clock BST and heard the news and some of the forces program, when there were no messages coming in. We had a lot of bother with the aerial soon after we started. The weather now is beautifully a sunshiny, but there is a slight motion in the ship.
