10th August 1940
Today’s weather has certainly made up for the last few days. The sky has been as clear as you could wish it, and the horizon as sharp as the edge of a razor. This enabled the officers to take a “sight” at noon. They have only been going on D.F bearings and calculations for the last 3 days. We were quite a few miles ahead of where we thought we were! They say we shall be in New York early Monday morning. We shall probably have to stay there for a few hours so I don’t know when we shall reach Albany, which is another 100-120 miles up the Hudson river.
I finished the drawing of the “skippers” youngest daughter last night. He seemed quite pleased with it. I am not looking forward to drawing his wife!
Another bunk has been put in my room in case the wireless cabin is closed in port, and ‘sparks’ has to sleep with me. I have also got a swivel chair! The ‘old man’ must be feeling kind-hearted today, for nobody else has got a chair at all!
