10th March 1945
We moved up to Antwerp this morning at 0630 and arrived at the oil jetty soon after mid-day. We lost no time in getting ashore. The voyage up was uneventful and the scenery flat and uninteresting. During the night we heard a number of flying bombs making for England.
Cliff, Hugh, Pete and I went ashore to see “the lights” and thoroughly enjoyed doing so.
We found little damage really. Not nearly so extensive as many parts of London.
We had a fine view of the Cathedral as we came up the river: for the town lies mainly on the water, as at Cherbourg Architecture as much as I had expected. One or two flashes of modern shoed that the change was coming before the war.
While up in town we came across a lorry load of ATS girls. They got into conversation with us, and we learned that one was from West Croydon and another knew Gwyn Isaac our 3rd Engineer. They were a jolly crowd. Another girl came from Ilford, Essex.
Two fellows came aboard trying to buy stuff. The third made made 1,250 francs. Nearly everyone made plenty.
