11th February 1944
Early this morning one of the escorts sighted a sub. In its wake. Two of the escorts went into attack, but without success. The aircraft on the carrier were ordered to help search at daylight. This they did, by being shot off the carrier’s deck from a short distance. The idea seemed to be to hook one of the taut wires stretched across the deck under a hook on the tail of the plane and then rev her up full. At the critical moment the wire was removed and the plane shot forward, almost without any run at all. Landing was the most amusing part. They seemed to come in very fast and then get hooked up in a couple of quick jerks and stop. Only ½ the deck was used.
Submarine was sighted on the surface three times this morning. Ample time to transmit. The search continues. This afternoon a destroyer morsed to the Commodore that Com. In Ch’f Western Approaches would send Coastal Command aircraft in the morning to help.
