11th January 1945
The wind has risen considerably and there is a gale warning.
Snow in blizzard form has been sweeping across the harbour, and the hills around Cherbourg all coated white. Our masts and rigging are also white, but the deck is, for the most part, wet.
There has been a misunderstanding between the Americans and ourselves owing to a Jerry broadcast imitating the B.B.C., which said that Montgomery had saved the situation in the Ardennes. We have been apologising all day!
