As soon as I had arrived, I looked for the offices. It was pouring with rain, and nobody seemed to know where they were. Air raid sirens were going, and guns could be heard plainly. I looked up the address of the office, in a telephone directory, and had soon found them. After this I just sat in the station until 7.30am, when I looked for some breakfast, but no café’s were open. At 8.45am I again looked for breakfast, but could only get a cup of coffee from the “Railway Pub Restaurant”. This, with a bar of chocolate, had to do, for it was getting on for 9 o’clock. As soon I had reached the offices, I realised that they were much better than either London or Liverpool. There were only two of us there so things did not take very long. I had got my luggage on board by 3.30pm, and went back to the office for my pay book, at 4pm. After a very good tea at a very nice café, I walked round the town. I spent a very queer night on board because there were no bed clothes.
