12th April 1940

I came off watch at 6:00 AM and thought I would have a nice long rest in bed. The boy woke me at 8:30, and asked me if I wanted any tea and toast, i said speech marks no “I’ll wait”. The next thing I knew it was 9:15 and now I can’t have anything to eat until 12:30 – 17 hours without a bite!

The Sky is cloudy today. To see a little choppy, but not bad. We are now clear of the channel, and are making for the West Indies – Curacao. we are still zigzagging, on a now well into the Atlantic. Anh S oh S came through from Obama, which had been broke down in the N. Sea. The first officer picked up the first message on his watch. Four men were on board, and when I picked up the second message, they were needing help urgently. It is horrible not being able to help them. Worse than when you are at home, and just hear it on the news.

I think it must be impossible to have a much more thrilling or exciting experience at my age than I am having now. It really is grand. Even though there is only sea and Sky to look at, I love it because they are never the same for more than a moment or two together.
