12th July 1940

I was woken up at 8am by the chief steward, and told that breakfast was ready. After disrobing my two pairs of pyjamas, and my boiler suite, I got dressed and ate a very good wholesome breakfast. The rest of the morning, I spent in writing letters, and getting things together. Lunch proved to be quite good, but the pudding of rice and currants, was hardly tasty! In the afternoon I went back to the city and posted my four letters. Then I phoned mum up, but could not say much in 3 minutes (3s 1d). I then returned and did a few odd jobs. Everybody seems surprised when I  keep coming back to the ship. They think I ought to go ashore and enjoy myself.
